Why La Union Is the Perfect Laid-Back Destination for Mature Travelers
La Union Travel Guide: A Relaxed Getaway for Older Travelers
La Union, Philippines, is an excellent vacation spot for older travelers seeking a peaceful, relaxing escape. While the area has grown popular with hipsters and the Gen Z crowd, there are still plenty of activities and experiences that seasoned visitors can enjoy without breaking the bank—or overexerting themselves.
Chill at Local Hangouts
During my trip, I spent time at a local hipster restobar near the beach, complete with a large cushioned lounge couch. We relaxed, enjoyed our food and drinks, and I never felt out of place. I got so comfortable that leaving was the hardest part of the visit.
Affordable Accommodations Are Enough
Next time, I’d choose a more budget-friendly place to stay, since most of the day is spent exploring rather than in the room. A TV or refrigerator isn’t necessary—a hot shower is essential. After a swim or a long, humid day of sightseeing, it’s a lifesaver to refresh before bed.
What to Expect in La Union
Truth be told, La Union doesn’t have many “must-see” attractions. It’s essentially a scenic stretch of road gradually climbing toward Ilocos Norte, with vast farmlands on one side and the South China Sea on the other.
Still, the Gen Z and hipster crowd have transformed La Union into a perfect weekend getaway from stifling city life. It’s easily accessible—no flights required—and retains its provincial charm. The occasional ocean breeze cuts through the humidity, making the experience even more enjoyable.
Beaches and Water Fun
Don’t expect Boracay’s turquoise waters or pristine white sand. La Union is different, but the sea breeze and variety of water activities—surfing decent-sized waves, wading in the water, or simply cooling off—make it a fun destination for everyone. There’s truly something for every type of water enthusiast.
Travel Tips for Visiting La Union
When exploring La Union, traveling solo, with a partner, or with one other couple is ideal. This approach gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace without the complications of coordinating a large group. I’ve traveled alone, with my wife, with another couple, and with bigger groups. My preference is always solo or with one other person or couple, as larger groups require extra patience and compromise.
Final Thoughts
La Union is perfect for a simple, relaxed getaway. With scenic views, a comfortable vibe, and activities for everyone, it’s an ideal destination for older travelers who want to enjoy the Philippines without the crowds and chaos of more popular tourist spots.
